Traditionally, Sainik Schools were exclusive to boys. But starting from the academic year 2021-22, many Sainik Schools have started admitting girls into Class 6 as part of a pilot project by the Ministry of Defence. There are no strict marks criteria, but performance in the AISSEE (All India Sainik School Entrance Exam) plays a vital role in selection. Hence, a strong academic foundation is essential.

Students must also show general awareness, numerical ability, and English language proficiency to compete effectively in the entrance exams. The curriculum is usually aligned with CBSE standards, so students studying under CBSE or state boards can apply without issues.

Age Limit for Class 6 AdmissionTo be eligible for admission into Class 6 at any Sainik School, candidates must be between 10 to 12 years old as of 31st March of the admission year. For instance, for the academic session 2025–26, the student must be born between 1st April 2013 and 31st March 2015 (both dates inclusive).

This age limit ensures that children entering the rigorous curriculum and structured lifestyle of Sainik Schools are of an appropriate maturity level. At this age, students can adapt well to the structured routines, sports training, and residential life that are the hallmark of these institutions. It also allows them to spend their formative schooling years under discipline, making them ideal candidates for further training in NDA or other institutions.
